  • Ngāti Pōneke (1930 – 1940)

    • The early 1930’s marked the beginning of urban migration. Visionaries Lady Pōmare, Sir Apirana Ngata, Sir Kingi Tahiwi and Pirihira Ma Heketa amongst others foresaw the need for an organisation where young people could meet and practice the rich cultural heritage of their tīpuna; a safe place based around tikanga, karakia, te Ao Māori - where young folk were supported and given strict boundaries (including dress and moral standards).
    • The Sir Maui Pomare Memorial Hui at Manukorihi Pa, Waitara, on 27 June 1936 provided the stimulus for the formation of Ngāti Poneke. Sir Apirana Ngata had assembled a group of workers to create tukutuku and carving for the wharenui which was to be opened at the Waitara hui.
    • Alongside their mahi the group practiced waiata-a-ringa and choral items under Sir Apirana’s direction. Their first public appearance was held at the Wellington Town Hall on 27 - 28 May 1936 (a month before the hui); a fundraising concert in conjunction with parties from Ngāti Raukawa, Whanganui and Ngā Rauru – held under the Vice-Regal patronage of their Excellencies Lord and Lady Galway.
    • Since its inception Ngāti Poneke has held a strong community focus, performing in numerous regional and national kapa haka competitions, concerts for visiting dignitaries, at local and national events; they have also participated in numerous overseas tours as a club and through individual representatives.
    • Ngāti Poneke also developed and has maintained strong links with Iwi / marae, kapa haka groups, local government, government, and the wider community.
    • The Second World War solidified Ngāti Poneke’s place in Wellington - welcoming and farewelling our own troops, entertaining foreign servicemen including regular fundraising concerts to support work of the Ngāti Poneke Welfare Committee.
  • NGĀTI PŌNEKE (1940 – onwards)

    • In 1944 the Ngāti Poneke Young Māori Club and Ngāti Poneke Tribal Committee came together under the combined banner of the Ngāti Poneke Association (NPMA). The Association’s role was to manage and maintain the buildings and land. NPMA also debated issues, organised events such as weekly dances and oversaw the Welfare Committee. The combined groups were known as Ngāti Poneke.
    • Cabinet agreed to lease the retiring American Services buildings to NPMA in 1944 in recognition of the work they had undertaken during WW2 and ongoing support of urban Māori.  The building was refurbished and opened by Prime Minister, Peter Fraser, in September of that same year.
    • In the late 1980s the Government relocated Ngāti Poneke, as the old hall site was required for the new Court of Appeal.  The government gifted Ngāti Poneke land in Thorndon Quay (vested with the Māori Trustee) near the site of the pre-European settlement Pipitea Marae.
    • Ngāti Poneke whānau fundraised and built the existing marae (which included a carpark to ensure ongoing income).
    • Pipitea Marae, the home of Ngāti Poneke, was opened by the Governor General, Sir Keith Holyoake on 31 May 1980.
    • NPMA was established as an incorporated society in 1981 to, amongst other things, promote and encourage the preservation of New Zealand Māoritanga, history, tradition, mythology, language, whenua, waiata, poi, haka, whakāro, tukutuku and arts.  Ngāti Poneke is pan-Iwi, non-sectarian and non-political.
    • NPMA took ownership of the building in 1992 (debt free), a celebration ball was held to recognise this momentous occasion.
